We made it through the first week of school! I am really enjoying myself as I get to know the first graders, and I am so glad to have the second graders back for a second year! I have a feeling this year is going to be a lot of fun! Your kids are great! :)
A couple things I want you to know:
1. Every morning, we do a "Morning Work" page. It has a variety of skills on it for your child to practice. I do not grade these based on correctness. I also am not looking for every child to complete the page. I am looking to see that they have been working diligently on the questions during our Morning Work time. When these come home in the Tuesday Folder (this next week!), please be aware that many of the students have not completed their page, yet they still received a + at the top. This is because they have completed enough to indicate diligent work. A handful of students are answering very little on the paper-sometimes only writing their name, or their name and the date or day of the week. That's not quite enough to be considered diligent work when we've got 10-15 minutes to work on these papers. I know it's early in the year, and I anticipate that they'll start filling out more and more of the pages as the year goes on. Everything is still so new, and some kids are still not fully transitioned into "school mode". We'll all get there!
2. I sent home a Scholastic book order catalog in your child's Daily Folder. The due date and "Class Activation Code" are listed on the front of the catalog. You can order with the catalog (with check payment) or online (with credit card). Ordering online is a great way for you to access additional titles for your child, too! If you order online, you have the option of accessing other grade level catalogs, as well as their "More Option" catalogs (SeeSaw for Kindergarten/1st grade, and Lucky for 2nd/3rd grades). Whether you order online or through the paper catalog, I earn points that can be used for free books. That means every time you order books for your child at home, we can earn free books for our classroom! This is a great way for me to keep our classroom library exciting and engaging. New books are such treasures to young readers. :)
**Also, look for Scholastic Book Order information under the "More" tab of this webpage. I hope to keep it updated with each month's due date and student "prize" for ordering. I'll also include any additional details that could be helpful.
It was great talking with you all last night at Parent Night. I always feel like I can't talk fast enough for the time we're given; on the other hand, I feel I'm talking too fast! If you have ANY questions, please let me know! Drop me a note in your child's Daily Folder, send me an email, comment on this blog post, or use the contact form on the "Home" tab of this webpage. You can also call the school office to leave a message, or catch me before or after school.
Have a blessed weekend,
Miss Wilson
