Good morning!
If you tried to access this week's homework page last night, I apologize. I had not uploaded it yet. It is now available, however! I also put the spelling lists on spelling city, so those are available. You may have noticed something new in your child's homework folder last night...I have added a sight word ring. If you did not have a chance to read the handout in your child's homework folder (or you did not see a handout), please take a look at the file on the handouts/newsletters tab. It is titled "sight word ring info page". This Friday we will be making apple pies in class as the culmination of our apple unit in science. Please let me know if you would be willing to send in apples to help with this. God Bless, Miss Wilson I hope you had a wonderful weekend!
As we enter the new week, I've updated the spelling city page. Please let me know if you encounter any issues with it. I already mixed someone up because I forgot to make the list public so it could be accessed. Woops! It should be public now, but if for some reason you cannot access it, let me know! :) The homework page is up on the Handouts/Newsletters tab. Shameless plug...Mrs. Barth (7th/8th grade teacher) and I are in charge of Drama Club at SCS, which starts with auditions this Thursday. Almost all of the students in our class said they were interested! We would LOVE to have them! Information will be coming home in tomorrow's Tuesday Folder. Auditions are Thursday, and there is an application that must be filled out prior to auditions. This helps us stay organized with "who wants what role", etc. Thanks! God Bless, Miss Wi Good morning!
I just noticed that I did not put up this week's spelling list on spelling city. I am SO sorry. I have been "promoting" this as a great way to practice, and it is...when I actually put the words up! I will do my best to make sure that never happens again! For those who are wanting to try spelling city with their child, here's the link again! https://www.spellingcity.com/SCSMissWilson/ God Bless, Miss Wilson As our book order due date approaches (rapidly!), I wanted to pass along the url to the website. You can order your child's book orders through the Scholastic Reading Club website as well. They provide a greater selection of books through the webpage than came home on the paper order forms.
If you choose to order through the website, please make sure to do so on or before September 19 (Friday), so I can submit your orders with any other order I receive. All you have to do is enter our class code when you order: ML84X. This ensures that the class earns the bonus points, and that the books arrive with the rest of the class orders. :) I apologize for not putting up yesterday's newsletter on the Handouts/Newsletters Tab yesterday. It is up now. :) I hope the memory verse and spelling practice is going well! God Bless, Miss Wilson If you went to Oktoberfest, I sure hope you had a wonderful time! I did! I was there all 4 days, playing clarinet with the Marion County Citizen's Band and also volunteering in our booth. What a blast!
Even if you didn't make it to Oktoberfest, I hope you had a wonderful weekend! This Friday, September 19, is the last day to turn in book orders. Please consider purchasing books through this program for your child. They have a wonderful selection of books, and they also offer bonus points to the classroom based on the student purchases. These bonus points help me to add new and exciting books to our classroom library! :) It's Monday, so I've uploaded our weekly Homework Page. Don't forget that spelling city is God Bless, Miss Wilson Good afternoon!
Just a couple reminders... Oktoberfest is this weekend, and I already saw a couple families when I was there yesterday! If you are able to make it, it's a wonderful opportunity to engage in the community and experience German culture. It's also a great volunteer opportunity for your Heart of a Servant hours. I believe there are still a couple shifts that could use more volunteers. If you are able, please help us fill in those shifts! The sign up page is in the building, around the corner from the office on the bulletin board. Many of the students did a GREAT job on their spelling tests today. However, there are a few students who could have benefitted from extra practice. Please help your child complete the spelling activities, and if you feel like Spelling City would be helpful to your child, help them practice on the website. The url to my profile is in a previous blog post. Please let me know if you need the url again. God Bless, Miss Wilson Good morning! I apologize for the lateness of posting! I have posted yesterday's newsletter from the Tuesday Folder on the Handouts and Newsletters tab.
Today is our first day checking books out from the library. A few things you should know about the library: 1. If your child is in 1st grade, he or she may check out 1 book. If your child is in 2nd grade, he or she may check out 2 books. I ask 2nd graders to consider checking out at least 1 chapter book (depending on reading abilities). This helps them to build more reading stamina, explore new reading "frontiers", and pushes them into a little bit more difficult reading. 2. We go to the library on Wednesday mornings from about 8:30-9:00. Occasionally we will share this time with the Kindergarten class. During this time, we will work on good library skills (how to treat books, how to find books, etc.). We will also return books and check new books out. 3. Each book can be checked out for one week. If your child would like to keep a book longer, we ask that they bring it to school so it can be checked out again. While we do not have a late fee, it is good practice for when they will check books out from the public library. Please help your child work on the skills of bringing things back by the due date. 4. If for some reason your child loses the book he or she has checked out, we do ask that you pay a replacement fee. As many of the books we have are older and difficult to find prices for, we've come up with an average book cost for a replacement fee. Our fee is $5. This is a REAL bargain if your child loses a hardcover picture book. I am sure many of you are aware that picture books can go for upwards of $16. We don't ask you to pay that, but we do ask that you help us to be able to replace it in the future by paying the $5 fee. If you have any questions about library, the skills your child will be working on, check out/return, etc., please let me know! :) God Bless, Miss Wilson First of all, I have uploaded this week's Homework Page to the Handouts/Newsletters Tab, as well as the spelling practice page that was attached to it when I sent them home in the Homework Folders. :)
For those of you who have students that were not in my class last year, you may need some information about spelling pretests. On Mondays (or the first day of the week), we take a spelling pretest in class. During the spelling pretests, I ask students to spell the words to the best of their ability. They may sound out the words verbally as needed. I do not expect them to spell the words correctly (since we haven't practiced them yet!), but if a student happens to spell all of the words correctly on the pretest, he or she does not need to take the spelling test on Friday. When this happens, I give full credit to the student for the spelling test, and they are able to work on something else while the rest of the group is taking the test. After we take the pretest, students put their pencils away and take out a colored pencil. We then go through the pretest and spell each word correctly using the colored pencil. I spell the words out loud and I write the correct spelling on the board. This provides students (and parents) a reference point for where the student started at the beginning of the week. Your child's spelling pretest can help you decide which words are more difficult or need more practice, and it also gives a visual that may help your child practice. Please notice what areas/sounds your child excels in or struggles with, as that information can prove helpful throughout the week. Don't forget to help your child complete the spelling activities that come home with the Homework Page, and remember that spelling city (my page link is in the previous blog update) is another practice option. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Welcome to the first full week of school! :) God Bless, Miss Wilson I have created a page through www.spellingcity.com, which is a wonderful tool to help students practice their spelling words. It can also be used to practice vocabulary, so you may see an option to work on vocabulary skills. Our primary focus is on spelling, as many of the words we will learn to spell are not new vocabulary words. Your child may practice vocabulary as well if they would like, but I would HIGHLY recommend that they use the spelling practice functions.
The url to access my profile/userpage on spelling city is: http://www.spellingcity.com/SCSMissWilson/ There is no need for a username and password, but if you find it difficult to access my page PLEASE let me know! :) Many of the students came in knowing the memory verse SO well! Thank you for helping them practice at home—it really helps! We do practice in class, but the more often they are able to practice the verse, the better they will be able to recite it come the end of the week. I want to remind you of the importance of memory verses-in Psalm 119:11, it says, "I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." Placing God's word on our hearts is incredibly important, and memorizing at a young age should not be overlooked! Many verses are important for students at this age to learn now, and many verses help them remember the concepts and stories from the Bible. Please help your child practice the memory verse each week. God Bless, Miss Wilson |
